U.S. Marine Corps F-35Bs Conduct First Highway Operations in Finland During Ramstein Flag Exercise

The U.S. Marine Corps recently made history by deploying its F-35B Lightning II fighter jets to conduct flight operations from a highway in Tervo, Finland. This unprecedented move is part of the NATO-led Exercise Ramstein Flag 2026, which took place from June 8th to June 12th and involved forces from 19 nations operating out of 15 different locations across Europe. The exercise included Spanish EF-18s, Polish F-16s, Finnish air force F/A-18 Hornets, alongside the U.S. Marine Corps' VMFA-224 squadron.

The highway operations in Finland were specifically designed to test combat adaptability and response capabilities in contested Arctic environments. According to Major General Daniel Shipley, commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa, these exercises enhance NATO's overall lethality and ensure the alliance can effectively deter and counter sophisticated aerial threats. The unconventional use of highways for flight operations underscores a strategic shift towards more flexible deployment options that could be crucial in future conflicts.

Lieutenant General Jason T. Hinds, commander of Allied Air Command, emphasized the broad scope of Ramstein Flag 2026, noting its significance in demonstrating NATO's ability to defend every inch of territory through distributed operations across various Joint Operations Areas. This exercise highlights the alliance’s commitment to countering modern and emerging threats by leveraging diverse operational strategies and technologies.
