Maryland Mother Sentenced to 50 Years for Shooting Teen Daughter

The court in Maryland has handed down a severe sentence of 50 years in prison to Talecka C. Brown, 34, following her conviction for the shooting and attempted murder of her 13-year-old daughter last September. The incident occurred on September 23, 2024, at their home in Seat Pleasant, an unincorporated city near Washington D.C., when Brown shot her daughter in the neck during a heated argument. Despite calling 911 to report the shooting, she initially misled authorities by claiming that a homeless person had been responsible for the injury.

Brown's actions extended beyond the initial shooting; she also attempted to obstruct justice by instructing her daughter to lie to police and fabricate a story about a home invasion. During the investigation, Brown showed little concern for her daughter’s well-being, even when the girl was in severe pain from the gunshot wound. After being arrested, Brown called her ex-husband from jail, leaving a message suggesting that the case would be dismissed if her daughter did not cooperate with law enforcement.

Brown faced multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, and using a firearm during a violent crime. She was convicted on these counts but the jury could not reach verdicts on second-degree attempted murder, second-degree child abuse, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. The sentence handed down by the court reflects the severity of her crimes and the potential danger she posed to her daughter’s life.
