Democrats Face Uphill Battle in Maine's 2nd District Race
Democrats are grappling with a new challenge as Maine State Auditor Matt Dunlap secured victory over centrist state Sen. Joe Baldacci in the Democratic primary for the state’s 2nd congressional district. This outcome complicates efforts by House Democrats to hold onto this swing seat, which has long been seen as a potential pickup opportunity for Republicans. Dunlap's win comes despite significant backing from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), which had added Baldacci to its "Red to Blue" program and spent $7,500 on joint advertising efforts.
The race takes place against the backdrop of Republican former Governor Paul LePage’s strong showing in this district during his 2022 gubernatorial campaign. With President Trump having won the area by nine points in 2024, Republicans are optimistic about their chances to capture the seat, especially after Rep. Jared Golden announced his retirement last fall. The Congressional Leadership Fund, the House GOP's main super PAC, has already reserved $5.2 million for advertising in this district.
While DCCC spokesperson Riya Vashi acknowledged that ME-02 remains competitive, there is uncertainty about whether Dunlap will be added to the "Red to Blue" program, which typically signals a commitment to financial support. A Democratic operative familiar with the selection process noted that the onus is on Dunlap to demonstrate his viability as a candidate, and emphasized that securing this seat was always going to be difficult without Golden’s electoral strength.
The broader context of ongoing scandals surrounding Senate nominee Graham Platner adds another layer of complexity for Democrats in Maine. Some party members have expressed concerns about Platner's impact on the ticket, leading the Democratic National Committee to alter digital ads featuring him among candidates in tight races. As the November elections approach, the DCCC’s decision on whether to fully support Dunlap could significantly influence the outcome in this critical swing district.
