US Army Deploys Autonomous Boats During Joint Philippine Exercise

The United States Army recently showcased its autonomous boat technology during a joint military exercise with the Philippine Army, marking an advancement in maritime operations. Soldiers from the 125th Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division utilized unmanned surface vessels (USVs) to escort a U.S. Army Logistics Support Vessel (LSV) as it approached Casiguran port. The exercise, part of Salaknib 2026, aimed to transport Philippine military personnel and vehicles over a distance of more than 260 miles.

The autonomous boats navigated independently using onboard sensors to detect potential threats and relay real-time situational awareness to command centers on land. This technology significantly enhances the speed and accuracy of decision-making processes for commanders by compressing information gathering from hours to mere seconds, according to Ben Outlaw, an industry partner representative supporting the operation.

The deployment of these autonomous boats comes at a time when the U.S. military is increasingly focusing on expanding its unmanned maritime fleet across the Indo-Pacific region. Earlier this year, Navy officials projected that the number of medium unmanned surface vessels would grow from approximately four in April to over 30 by 2030, complemented by thousands of smaller USVs and unmanned aircraft systems.

This demonstration highlights the evolving role of autonomous systems in enhancing security and operational efficiency for military exercises and rescue missions alike. For instance, similar technology was recently used to assist in the recovery of two Army soldiers whose helicopter crashed near Oman's coast.
