Newly Released Photos of Maury Island UFO Material Classified as "Unidentified Substance" in 1947 Report

The United States Air Force has released a set of photographs depicting physical samples associated with the controversial Maury Island UFO incident from 1947. The images, made public on May 8, 2026, show pieces of material that were initially given to Kenneth Arnold by Fred Crisman and later turned over to Major Sanders for investigation. These materials were photographed at an Army Air Force field in Hamilton, California.

The samples are categorized as "Unidentified Substance" in a report written by Lt. Colonel Springer on August 12, 1947, which was distributed to FBI offices in Seattle and Portland. The document provides details about the initial handling of the case but also highlights discrepancies and disputes surrounding its authenticity. According to internal FBI memos, the agency concluded that the incident was likely a hoax based on coerced confessions from Crisman and another individual involved, as well as a visual comparison by Major Sanders suggesting the material resembled smelter slag.

Despite these conclusions, the newly released photos add another layer of complexity to the Maury Island UFO case. The release also sheds light on other historical UFO investigations, including the B-52 crash that occurred later. While some had speculated about conspiracy theories related to this crash, the documents now indicate it was an unintended tragedy with no direct connection to the UFO incident.

The significance of these newly released photos lies in their potential to reignite debates and further research into one of the earliest documented UFO cases in the United States.
