European Parliament Members Call for FIFA to Revoke Russian Teams' Entry to U-15 World Cup
European lawmakers from 44 member states are urging FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider his decision to allow Russian athletes to participate in the inaugural U-15 World Cup set to take place this October in Azerbaijan. The letter, obtained by POLITICO, argues that Russia should not be permitted back into international competitions until it agrees to peace negotiations with Ukraine and ceases its aggressive actions against Ukrainian territories.
The lawmakers highlight the ongoing issue of around 20,000 Ukrainian children who have been forcibly kidnapped and separated from their families by Russian forces. They argue that FIFA's decision to open the competition to all member associations, including Russia, undermines efforts towards peace and reconciliation in Eastern Europe. The letter emphasizes that allowing Russia's participation could lead to a boycott of the event by other countries, thereby distorting the principle of fair play and sportsmanship.
FIFA initially banned Russian teams from participating in its competitions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 but lifted this ban for youth tournaments last year. The organization has since announced that the upcoming U-15 World Cup will be open to all FIFA member associations, a move seen by some as a premature easing of sanctions against Russia. UEFA and other European football bodies have previously expressed concern over the potential inclusion of Russian teams in international competitions, citing ongoing hostilities and human rights violations.
The European Parliament's stance reflects broader concerns within the EU about Russia’s gradual return to global sports events following its military actions in Ukraine. The decision by FIFA to allow Russian participation has sparked controversy among member associations and raised questions about the organization’s role in promoting peace through sports.
