Poland Halts MiG-29 Transfer to Ukraine Over Drone Tech Dispute

Poland has suspended plans to transfer additional MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets to Ukraine due to a disagreement over drone technology. The decision was announced by Polish Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who cited Ukraine's failure to share information on its advanced drone production capabilities as the reason for the halt.

Under former President Andrzej Duda, Poland had been at the forefront of providing military aid to Ukraine, donating 14 MiG-29s in a significant show of support. However, with the election of new Polish President Karol Nawrocki last August, the country's approach has shifted towards more reciprocal arrangements. Kosiniak-Kamysz proposed an exchange of MiGs for drone technology but claims that Ukraine did not honor this agreement.

The defense minister emphasized Poland’s interest in leveraging Ukraine's technological capabilities, particularly in drones, which he believes could be beneficial to Polish defense efforts. He noted that the previous administration acted correctly given the dire situation Ukraine faced at the time but stressed the current need for mutual benefit in military assistance.

This move reflects a broader trend of Western nations reconsidering their unconditional support for Ukraine and seeking more tangible returns from aid recipients. It echoes former U.S. President Donald Trump's stance on NATO allies paying more for defense, suggesting that geopolitical dynamics are increasingly influenced by demands for reciprocity rather than unilateral support.
