Trump Announces Sanctions Lift and Possible F-35 Sale to Turkey

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the United States would lift sanctions imposed on Turkey in 2020 due to Ankara's acquisition of Russian S-400 defense missiles. The move comes as part of a diplomatic effort to mend relations between the two NATO allies, which have been strained since Turkey's controversial purchase of the Russian system in 2019. Trump made the announcement during his visit to Turkey for a NATO summit, where he met with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

The sanctions imposed by Washington targeted a major Turkish defense company and excluded Turkey from the F-35 stealth fighter jet program, significantly impacting Ankara's military capabilities and relations with the United States. Despite these tensions, Trump emphasized his willingness to reconsider selling F-35 jets to Turkey, although he did not provide specific details on how such a transaction could circumvent existing legal restrictions.

Congress has enacted legislation prohibiting any sale of F-35s to Turkey as long as Ankara retains its S-400 system, citing security concerns. The Russian-made missile defense system poses a potential threat to U.S.-made combat aircraft and their technology. Trump's support for an eventual F-35 sale to Turkey could involve creative solutions such as transferring the S-400s to a third country, though no agreement on this has been finalized yet.

Trump’s visit marks the first by a U.S. president in over a decade and was met with high-level ceremonial honors from Erdogan. The two leaders used the occasion to highlight their strong alliance, despite concerns about Turkey's human rights record under Erdogan's leadership, which have not been a significant point of contention for Washington during Trump's tenure.
