Sanders Urges Maine Democrat to Step Aside Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has publicly urged Graham Platner, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, to withdraw from his campaign following serious allegations of sexual assault against him. The senator's statement came after a POLITICO report revealed that a woman who dated Platner claimed he forced her to have sex with him nearly five years ago. In response to these accusations, Sanders recommended that Platner step aside and allow the Democratic Party in Maine to find an alternative candidate.

Platner has denied the allegations, stating unequivocally that any accusation of non-consensual behavior is untrue. Despite this denial, numerous elected officials and prominent Democrats have called for Platner's resignation since Monday night. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and a top Senate super PAC also withdrew their financial support from Platner on Monday.

Maine state law requires the nominee to step down by July 13 if they choose to do so voluntarily. Should Platner decide to withdraw, the Maine Democratic Party would then select a new candidate by July 27. This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Maine, as Sanders had previously endorsed Platner and campaigned alongside him despite earlier controversies involving his social media posts and personal history.

The controversy surrounding Platner's candidacy has intensified following recent revelations about his past behavior, which have led to calls for accountability from both within and outside the Democratic Party. The organization Our Revolution, founded during Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, is advocating for a candidate who aligns with the party’s progressive values and has a track record of supporting working people and unions.

This turn of events underscores the growing scrutiny faced by political figures in light of allegations of misconduct, highlighting the delicate balance between public trust and partisan loyalty.
