Alleged La Unión Tepito Leader Arrested for Fourth Time in Mexico

La Unión Tepito, a criminal network operating primarily in Mexico City's Tepito neighborhood, has seen one of its alleged leaders, Renat Dassae (alias "El Daza"), arrested once again. This marks the fourth time El Daza has been apprehended by law enforcement, highlighting the persistent challenges authorities face in dismantling this influential criminal organization. El Daza is linked to UJ40, a powerful cell within La Unión Tepito known for its involvement in extortion activities targeting merchants in Mexico City’s Historic Center and Tepito.

La Unión Tepito emerged as a dominant force in the early 2010s after the collapse of the Beltrán Leyva Organization (BLO) and the subsequent weakening of the Tepito Cartel. The group was formed by defectors from both the BLO and Familia Michoacana, with some suggesting that Édgar Valdés Villarreal, alias "La Barbie," played a role in its formation. La Unión Tepito quickly established itself through acts of violence aimed at asserting control over key areas within Mexico City, including driving out cells from larger national organizations like the Zetas and Sinaloa Cartel.

The organization's activities extend beyond extortion to include small-scale drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling contraband goods, and other illicit operations. Its influence in Tepito and surrounding regions underscores its significance as a local criminal power structure that continues to evade full eradication despite multiple arrests of key figures like El Daza.
