U.S. Soldier's Heroic Stand in Vietnam Upgraded to Medal of Honor

The story of Leonard Louis Alvarado, a California native who enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1968 and was deployed to Vietnam by August 1969, highlights an extraordinary act of bravery that ultimately cost him his life but earned him the nation's highest military honor posthumously. On July 25, 1970, Alvarado, then a Specialist 4 in Company D, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, was part of a small reaction force advancing through dense jungle near Duc Phong in Phuoc Long Province to assist an endangered American platoon. As the situation escalated into a counterattack that threatened his own unit's survival, Alvarado’s actions became pivotal.

Upon detecting enemy movement, Alvarado engaged the Vietnamese communist forces with immediate and decisive action. Despite being pinned down by heavy small arms fire, he charged forward through machine gun fire to engage the enemy directly. His bravery was evident when he killed a North Vietnamese grenadier after sustaining injuries from an exploding grenade. He continued his efforts under relentless fire, pulling several wounded comrades back into their defensive perimeter.

Recognizing that his unit needed to disengage from the larger enemy force, Alvarado maneuvered alone through dangerous terrain, silencing multiple PAVN positions and machine gun nests with his rifle and grenades. His persistent suppressive fire forced the communists to break contact rather than pursuing his platoon. However, Alvarado succumbed to his wounds shortly after, leaving behind a wife and daughter.

Alvarado’s sacrifice was initially recognized with the Distinguished Service Cross, but in 2014, following a re-evaluation of his record under the Defense Authorization Act, President Barack Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the White House. His remains are interred at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bakersfield, California.
