Happy-Face Spider Discovered in Himalayas After Centuries of Being Confined to Hawaii

Scientists have made a surprising discovery, spotting a rare and distinctive species known as the Happy-Face spider far beyond its previously documented habitat. Traditionally found only in the Hawaiian Islands, this unique arachnid has now been identified in the Montane mountains of Uttarakhand, India. The new find is detailed in a recent paper published in *Evolutionary Systematics* by researchers Ashirwad Tripathy and Devi Priyadarshini from the Forest Research Institute and Regional Museum of Natural History.

The discovery was made accidentally while the scientists were studying ants in the region. Upon examining an image sent to her by colleague Ashirwad Tripathy, researcher Devi Priyadarshini recognized the unmistakable grin-like markings on a spider's abdomen that she had seen during her master’s program in Hawaii. This led to further exploration and confirmed the presence of the new species, which they named *Theridion himalayan*.

The researchers found 32 distinct color variations of the Himalayan Happy-Face spider across three locations in Uttarakhand: Makku, Tala, and Mandal. DNA analysis revealed that this newly identified species differs by approximately 8.5% from its Hawaiian counterpart, indicating independent evolution. This finding suggests a unique evolutionary history for the spiders in both regions despite their striking similarities.

While the exact reason behind these colorful markings remains unclear, researchers speculate that they play a crucial role in survival and possibly serve as a form of camouflage or communication within the species' complex life cycle. The spider's tendency to cling to ginger plants, which are not native to Hawaii, hints at an intriguing evolutionary link between the Hawaiian and Himalayan populations.
