Three Family Members Face Charges in Pennsylvania Child Torture Case
Three individuals, including a mother, grandmother, and uncle, are now in custody in York County, Pennsylvania, following an investigation into severe child abuse. Ashley Cardona, 31, Lori Cardona, 51, and Michael Cardona, 27, face multiple charges including aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, and endangering the welfare of children. The arrests stem from an investigation initiated in March 2024, after hospital staff reported two children, aged five and six, exhibiting signs of extreme neglect and physical harm.
Police reports indicate that one child was allegedly confined to a car seat for up to 20 hours daily, leading to significant musculoskeletal issues and limited mobility. The other child reportedly lived in a "cage-like structure" fashioned from cribs, exhibiting malnourishment and poor hygiene. This structure, which smelled of urine and had caked feces, was reportedly built with assistance from Michael Cardona. Authorities assert that the children had not left the home in approximately two years and lacked routine medical or dental care since 2019, with one child having 16 cavities and not being toilet-trained.
A physician from the Child Protective Team at Penn State Health determined that the circumstances meet the definition of child torture. The children were removed from the home in July 2023 and have shown rapid improvement in foster care. Despite prior visits from child services noting confinement, the full scope of the abuse only came to light after the hospital's intervention. The accused remain jailed on $250,000 bail.
