Family Sues ICE Over Death of Cuban Immigrant in Texas Detention Center

The family of Geraldo Lunas Campos has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following his death at an ICE detention center in Texas earlier this year. The local coroner's office concluded that Campos' death was caused by asphyxia, classifying it as a homicide. However, the Department of Homeland Security maintains that Campos had attempted suicide. Eyewitnesses to the incident claim that Campos died after being restrained by multiple guards at the facility.

Campos, a 55-year-old Cuban immigrant, was in ICE custody when the fatal incident occurred. His family's legal action names four guards involved in his detention and care as defendants, alleging negligence and misconduct leading up to his death. The lawsuit seeks accountability from both the individual guards and ICE for their roles in Campos' demise.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about conditions within immigrant detention centers across the United States. Advocates argue that such facilities often lack adequate medical oversight and mental health support, potentially exacerbating dangerous situations for detainees. As similar incidents continue to surface, they fuel debates over the broader policies governing immigration enforcement and detainee rights in America.
