Olympic Organizers Take a Different Path from FIFA in Dealing with the White House
The upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles are set to follow a markedly different approach compared to FIFA's handling of relations with President Donald Trump. While FIFA has maintained close ties with the White House, including regular appearances by its president Gianni Infantino alongside Trump and even awarding him a peace prize, Olympic officials have been more cautious and reserved in their interactions.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC), led by newly elected president Kirsty Coventry, has kept a distance from direct involvement with the administration. Instead, LA28, the local organizing committee for the Olympics, has taken on the role of interfacing with the White House. This strategy aims to maintain operational independence while still ensuring cooperation on logistical and diplomatic fronts.
Casey Wasserman, chair of LA28, has emerged as a key figure in managing relations between the Olympic movement and Trump's administration. Unlike Infantino’s public displays of support for the president, Wasserman focuses on practical collaboration without seeking media attention or engaging in overt political gestures. This approach aligns with Coventry's stated preference for building relationships through consistent engagement rather than grandstanding.
Cooperation behind the scenes has already begun between LA28 and the White House Olympic Task Force established by Trump last year. Discussions have covered a range of issues, including plans for a pro-am golf tournament at Trump’s Los Angeles-area course before the Games. Additionally, LA28 is working with the State Department to develop a dedicated visa processing portal for Olympic athletes and officials, facilitating smoother entry into the United States.
Despite the contrasting approaches between FIFA and the IOC, both organizations share a common goal of ensuring successful events under the current administration’s oversight. Trump's continued interest in the Olympics reflects his role in securing these major sporting events during his presidency, alongside the 2026 World Cup.
The divergent strategies employed by FIFA and LA28 underscore the delicate balance between maintaining political neutrality and fostering necessary cooperation with government bodies. As the Los Angeles Games approach, the effectiveness of this cautious yet pragmatic approach will be closely watched by both sports organizations and political observers alike.
