Drunk Driver Speeds at 90 mph Through Tunnel, Crashes and Kills Two Trapped Victims
A tragic incident occurred in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when Madison Elizabeth Rau, a 23-year-old woman, was involved in a fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of two individuals. According to court records reviewed by Law&Crime, Rau is now facing charges including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence (DUI), aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, and involuntary manslaughter.
The accident took place on March 1 when Rau allegedly sped through the Liberty Tunnel at an excessive speed of 90 mph. Upon exiting the tunnel, she crashed into two vehicles on the Liberty Bridge, causing her car to catch fire. The crash trapped three individuals inside the vehicles: Rau herself and her two victims, Jaren Wilkerson and Laila Jones.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find a chaotic situation with flames engulfing one of the vehicles. They managed to remove Rau from the vehicle where she was lying on top of Laila Jones. Medical personnel pronounced Jones dead at the scene. Jaren Wilkerson, who was in critical condition after being extricated from the rear of his vehicle, was rushed to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement officials stated that Rau had been driving under the influence and her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) tested at approximately 0.14%, well above the legal limit for DUI in Pennsylvania. Additionally, open alcohol containers were found both inside Rau's vehicle and at the crash site, further supporting the charges against her.
Rau suffered severe injuries from the collision, including fractures to her spine, femur, wrist, and ribs, as well as lacerations to her head. Despite these critical conditions, she was arrested on Friday and appeared in court. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 24.
The victims, Laila Jones and Jaren Wilkerson, were remembered fondly by their loved ones. Jones, who was described as an "incredible mother" to her five-year-old son Karter, was also known for her outgoing spirit and the joy she brought into people's lives. Wilkerson, on the other hand, had a passion for music and rapping, which defined much of his identity.
This incident highlights the dangers associated with drunk driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives. The crash underscores the importance of enforcing DUI laws to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
