Illinois Police Officer Charged with First-Degree Murder for Roommate's Death
An Illinois police officer has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her roommate after she allegedly shot him following a series of threatening Snapchat messages. Caitlynn J. Girkin, 27, was arrested and booked into Tazewell County Jail on Tuesday. The incident occurred early on March 10 at their home located on Roosevelt Road in Creve Coeur, Illinois.
According to court records reviewed by local CBS affiliate WMBD, the police were called to the scene around 2:15 a.m., where they found Adolfo Cazares, 29, lying in the hallway with blood visible from his nose, mouth, and chest. A handgun was discovered on Girkin's bed, leading investigators to take over the case due to her status as an officer with the Creve Coeur Police Department.
Girkin’s account of events has evolved significantly since the incident. Initially, she claimed that Cazares had entered her room armed, raised a gun at her, and then she heard what sounded like a gunshot after she reached for it. She reported asking him if he had shot himself, to which Cazares allegedly confirmed.
However, in subsequent statements, Girkin changed her story multiple times. Six weeks later, she detailed how the gun was already on her nightstand when Cazares entered her room and that she feared a sexual assault might occur, despite earlier claims of no such threats being made on this particular day. She also stated that Snapchat messages showing her holding a gun to her head prompted Cazares's entry into her room.
The conflicting narratives presented by Girkin have raised questions about the veracity of her accounts and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The case has garnered significant attention due to its unusual nature, involving an officer accused of killing someone in what could be seen as a domestic situation.
Cazares' obituary paints a picture of a beloved individual who enjoyed hobbies such as playing Magic with friends, traveling, and spending time with his nephews. He was also known for his affection towards his cat Bookero and his friendly demeanor toward everyone he met.
Girkin is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday, facing serious charges that could have significant implications not only for her but also for the broader community's perception of law enforcement integrity.
