Arizona Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Random Shooting of Retiring Senior in Restaurant Parking Lot
Roberto Antonio Trejo, a 22-year-old from Arizona, has been sentenced to two decades in prison for the murder of Frank Vitale, a 66-year-old man who was preparing to retire and move to a new state. The shooting occurred on October 14, 2024, shortly after noon at Number 1 Buffet in Avondale, just outside Phoenix.
Vitale had finished his lunch when he entered his car parked nearby. As he sat inside, Trejo approached the vehicle and shot Vitale through the window with a handgun before fleeing the scene. The two men did not know each other, and there was no apparent motive for the attack. Surveillance footage captured a suspicious individual running from the area shortly after the shooting.
Trejo was apprehended by law enforcement approximately 45 minutes later with a firearm in his possession. He had been released from prison just five months prior following an aggravated assault conviction and was on probation at the time of Vitale's murder. Trejo pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in April, leading to his recent sentencing.
According to prosecutors, Frank Vitale was planning to retire from his job at Home Depot in Long Island, New York, and relocate to Arizona with his sister. The tragic incident cut short Vitale’s plans for a new chapter of life. His obituary highlighted his dedication to his work and family.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized the severity of Trejo's actions, stating that no amount of time could compensate for the pain caused by the senseless murder. She praised homicide prosecutor Daniel Strange for securing justice in this case, ensuring that Trejo will not pose a threat to the community for at least two decades.
The incident has raised concerns about public safety and random acts of violence against unsuspecting individuals in everyday settings like restaurants and parking lots. It underscores the unpredictable nature of such crimes and highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in preventing them.
