Lindsey Graham’s Sister Appointed to Finish Late Senator’s Term
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced Monday that Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, will fill his Senate seat until January 3, 2027. This decision follows Graham's sudden death on July 12, just weeks before he was set to run for re-election.
McMaster highlighted the significance of this appointment during a press conference at the South Carolina Statehouse, emphasizing that it is both his duty and honor to name Nordone as Graham’s successor. The governor noted that Lindsey had taken care of Darline when their parents passed away within 15 months of each other in the late 1970s, making her appointment a fitting tribute.
President Donald Trump also endorsed Nordone's nomination on Truth Social, calling it "a fabulous tribute to Lindsey," who he described as having loved his sister dearly. Graham himself had considered Nordone his closest family member and often brought her along to campaign events and speaking engagements throughout his political career.
Darline Graham Nordone expressed her determination to fulfill this role in honor of her brother's memory, stating that she would do everything possible to carry out Lindsey’s work. She emphasized the deep bond they shared, noting that he had always been there for her when needed most.
Nordone has never held public office but has extensive experience working with individuals with disabilities, helping them find employment opportunities. As a mother of two, Nordone brings both personal and professional experiences to this new role, which will require her to navigate the complexities of Senate proceedings without prior political experience.
The appointment sets the stage for upcoming elections in South Carolina, where a special election is scheduled for August 22 to determine who will replace Graham as the Republican nominee. Among those considering running are Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, both from South Carolina’s Fourth Congressional District. Norman could potentially announce his candidacy as early as Tuesday.
Rep. Joe Wilson has opted not to run for the Senate seat, choosing instead to remain in the House of Representatives to maintain Trump's slim majority there. His decision underscores the political dynamics at play within the Republican Party and highlights the strategic considerations candidates must weigh when entering a special election race.
With Graham’s sister now appointed to finish his term, South Carolina faces an uncertain political landscape as it prepares for the upcoming elections. The appointment of Nordone marks a significant moment in state politics, reflecting both personal and political ties that will shape the future of representation in Washington.
