Kansas Parents Face Felony Charges After Unsecured Shotgun Kills Two Children

A mother and father in Kansas are now facing felony charges following an incident where one of their children found a loaded shotgun that was improperly secured. The tragic event occurred on March 28 at the family home in Brookville, approximately 100 miles northwest of Wichita.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), Aaron French, 37, and Makayla French, 28, are each charged with four counts of aggravated child endangerment. The charges stem from the deaths of their two young children: Paxton French, an 8-year-old boy, and his sister Lilly French, a 5-year-old girl.

The incident unfolded when another child within the household discovered the unsecured firearm. Police have not disclosed how many shots were fired or exactly how the younger sibling located the weapon. Both victims sustained fatal injuries; Lilly was pronounced dead at the scene while Paxton succumbed to his wounds four days later after being airlifted to a hospital.

Ellsworth County Attorney's Office filed these charges on Friday, citing that the parents "recklessly" placed their children in danger of physical harm by failing to secure the weapon properly. The case highlights the severe consequences that can arise from inadequate firearm safety measures within homes with young residents.

Paxton French was described as an enthusiastic child who loved riding his go-kart and four-wheeler, dreaming of joining the U.S. Army someday. He also enjoyed playing video games like Minecraft and had a gentle heart for animals, particularly his hamster. Lilly French, on the other hand, cherished K-pop music, singing, and outdoor activities. She was known for her love of school and her deep affection for animals.

The parents are scheduled to appear in court on July 28 to face these charges. This case underscores the critical importance of responsible gun ownership and proper safety measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring. The community mourns the loss of two young lives cut short by circumstances that could have been prevented with better precautions.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for families across the country about the necessity of securing firearms away from children, especially in households where multiple siblings are present. As the legal proceedings move forward, questions remain regarding the specific actions or omissions by the parents that led to this tragic outcome and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in future.
