Iranian Drone Boat Strikes Oil Tanker Off Oman, Marking First Direct Attack

A Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, the MKD VYOM, has become the first vessel confirmed to be struck by an Iranian uncrewed surface vessel (USV) in the ongoing conflict. The incident, initially reported as a projectile strike on March 1, occurred approximately 50 nautical miles north of Muscat, Oman. Maritime security firm Ambrey confirmed the USV involvement, a development echoed by an updated assessment from the United Kingdom Marine Trade Operations (UKMTO). One crew member tragically died in the engine room following an explosion and subsequent fire aboard the tanker.

The UKMTO has confirmed the crew's evacuation and stated that authorities are currently investigating the attack. This marks a significant escalation, as Iran has now directly employed its USV technology in a strike, a capability previously demonstrated by its Houthi allies against commercial shipping in the Red Sea. Both Iran and the Houthis have been at the forefront of developing and deploying these kamikaze drone boats, which pose a growing threat to maritime security.

The use of USVs by Iran underscores the evolving nature of naval warfare, mirroring their extensive deployment by Ukraine against Russian forces. This incident highlights the increasing danger these autonomous weapons present to both military and commercial vessels in contested waters. Shipping companies are advised to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity to maritime authorities as investigations continue into this unprecedented attack.
