U.S. Air Force Airmen Mourn Death of 23-Year-Old After Equipment Accident

A U.S. Air Force airman died Thursday following an accident involving heavy equipment at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The incident occurred when the machinery he was operating rolled down an embankment, resulting in fatal injuries for 1st Class Cedric Eneluna, a 23-year-old member of the base's 30th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Pavements and Equipment Flight.

The Space Force confirmed the identity of the deceased on Friday, highlighting that no other personnel were injured during the incident. An official investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the accident, with all findings expected to be released once the inquiry is complete. As of now, the Santa Barbara Coroner’s office has yet to finalize its determination regarding the cause of death.

Eneluna had enlisted in the military in 2024 and was stationed at Vandenberg Space Force Base since August of that year. His role involved supporting the maintenance of roads, airfields, and infrastructure critical for the base's launch, test, and range operations. Colleagues described Eneluna as a dedicated individual who consistently displayed professionalism and humility.

"Eneluna served with an unwavering commitment to his teammates and the mission," stated a Space Force release. His positive attitude and tireless work ethic earned him respect and admiration from those around him. According to Lt. Col. Seth Poulsen, commander of the 30th CES, Eneluna was known for bringing out the best in everyone he worked with.

Born in the Philippines and calling Fayetteville, North Carolina his hometown, Eneluna joined a unit nicknamed "the Dirt Boyz" due to their responsibilities related to base infrastructure maintenance. His fellow team members remembered him as someone who made everyone feel welcome and never hesitated to offer assistance whenever needed.

The 30th Pavements and Equipment Flight plays a crucial role in ensuring the operational readiness of Vandenberg Space Force Base, which hosts numerous space launches and tests each year. The loss of Eneluna is likely to impact not only his immediate unit but also the broader community at the base, where he was seen as an integral part.
