Michigan Governor Whitmer Endorses Rep. Haley Stevens in Senate Race

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has thrown her support behind Representative Haley Stevens in the state’s upcoming Democratic primary for a U.S. Senate seat. The endorsement comes as Democrats prepare for a contentious battle to replace retiring Senator Gary Peters, who is stepping down after two terms.

In a video posted on Stevens’ Twitter account, Whitmer emphasized her commitment to getting things done and highlighted Stevens' ability to achieve results for Michigan. "As governor, I have one strategy: Get things done," Whitmer stated. "And that strategy informs everything that I do, which is why I’m endorsing Haley Stevens for the U.S. Senate."

The endorsement marks a significant moment in the primary race, with Stevens now receiving backing from key figures within the Democratic establishment. She will be hosting a meet-and-greet event alongside Governor Whitmer and Representative Jim Clyburn of South Carolina in Detroit on Friday afternoon.

Stevens faces stiff competition from Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official who has garnered strong support among progressive Democrats. The race reflects the ideological divide within the Democratic Party, with Stevens representing the more moderate wing and El-Sayed aligning closely with the party’s left flank.

El-Sayed's campaign has been fueled by endorsements from prominent progressives such as Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, along with Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Warren’s endorsement video praised El-Sayed for his commitment to not accepting corporate donations, a stance that has become increasingly important in the wake of extensive outside funding for Stevens’ campaign.

Stevens' bid has received substantial financial backing from pro-Israel lobbying groups and other influential organizations, including nearly $30 million from the United Democracy Project. This influx of money has raised concerns among progressives about the influence of corporate interests on Democratic politics.

The winner of the primary will face Republican candidate Mike Rogers in November, who has already secured an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
