US Military Engaged in Conventional War Against Iran's Unconventional Tactics

The United States finds itself embroiled in another asymmetric conflict in the Middle East as it wages a largely conventional war against an enemy that excels in unconventional warfare. This ongoing struggle highlights the limitations of traditional military might when faced with adversaries who employ guerrilla tactics and low-cost weaponry, such as Iran's extensive use of drones.

Since the onset of hostilities, the U.S. has targeted numerous Iranian military assets, significantly weakening its conventional naval forces. However, despite these efforts, Iran continues to inflict economic damage by restricting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that sees about 20% of global oil shipments pass through it annually before the conflict began. Additionally, Iran's use of relatively inexpensive drones has proven effective in launching attacks against U.S. troops and allied nations across the region.

Jonathan Schroden, an irregular warfare expert with CNA, underscores the stark differences between conventional and asymmetric warfare strategies. "In a conventional war," he explained to Task & Purpose, "the objective is typically to inflict enough damage on the enemy to force them into submission." Conversely, Iran's approach focuses on imposing costs over time and outlasting the U.S., leveraging economic sanctions and prolonged conflict to achieve its political objectives.

Schroden further elaborated that while the United States has made significant inroads in destroying Iran’s conventional military capabilities, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) remains a formidable force. The IRGC operates independently of the regular Iranian armed forces and is adept at employing asymmetric tactics such as cyber attacks, drone strikes, and sabotage operations.

The current conflict underscores the evolving nature of warfare in the modern era, where technological advancements have enabled smaller nations to challenge superpowers through unconventional means. This shift challenges traditional military doctrines and necessitates a reevaluation of strategies employed by conventional forces like those of the United States. As the war continues, both sides are likely to adapt their tactics further, making the outcome increasingly unpredictable.

The implications of this asymmetric conflict extend beyond the immediate battlefield, affecting global oil markets, international trade routes, and regional stability in the Middle East. The prolonged nature of such conflicts also places a strain on military resources and public support for continued engagement, highlighting the complex challenges faced by modern military strategists and policymakers alike.
