Lt. Gen. Kevin Admiral Selected to Lead U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command

Lt. Gen. Kevin Admiral has been chosen by the Pentagon to lead the U.S. Army's presence in Europe and Africa, replacing outgoing General Christopher Donahue. The announcement came Thursday as part of a statement from officials within the Department of War. Admiral currently commands III Armored Corps based at Fort Hood in Texas.

General Donahue had recently stepped down after serving since late 2024. He gained national recognition for his role in overseeing the final withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan in 2021, earning him the title of "the last soldier out." His departure marks another significant change at a time when military leadership has seen multiple turnovers.

President Donald Trump nominated Admiral for the position on Thursday. However, confirmation by the Senate is still required before he can officially take charge. If confirmed, Admiral will also assume command of NATO's Allied Land Command.

The decision to appoint Admiral comes amid ongoing tensions within NATO and between the United States and its European allies. Earlier this year, military threats from the U.S. over Greenland led to heightened concerns among member nations, prompting them to prepare defensive measures against potential infrastructure damage. Additionally, the Pentagon canceled troop deployments to Europe earlier in 2026 due to escalating rhetoric from the president.

Admiral's extensive experience includes commanding the 1st Cavalry Division and serving as director of Force Management for the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, U.S. Army. He has also deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Europe throughout his career. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

The appointment of Admiral is expected to bring stability to a region fraught with geopolitical challenges and internal military restructuring issues. As tensions continue to rise in Eastern Europe and Africa, his leadership will be crucial in maintaining strong alliances and ensuring readiness for potential conflicts or crises.
