Pratt & Whitney Unveils BARB Robot in Jet Engine Assembly Line
Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies Corporation, has introduced its latest technological advancement in the form of BARB (Bearing Automation Robotic Builder) at its jet engine assembly plant in Middletown, Connecticut. This robot is designed to handle specific assembly processes for the company's commercial 1100G geared turbofan engines, which power several Airbus and Embraer fleets. The introduction of BARB marks a significant step towards integrating automation into the traditionally human-dependent process of jet engine manufacturing.
The $20 million investment in BARB reflects Pratt & Whitney’s commitment to leveraging advanced robotics to enhance efficiency and precision in its production lines. Ted Sluis, vice president and manager of Product Delivery Centers at Pratt & Whitney, highlighted that BARB was introduced around late 2024 but only became operational this spring after rigorous testing phases. During these tests, the robot's visual inspection capabilities were challenged by variations in part conditions, such as differences between old and new parts.
The assembly process for the 1100G engine involves intricate steps that require high precision and attention to detail. BARB is specifically tasked with assembling three critical bearings—the #2 ball bearing and the rear roller bearings (#5 and #6)—which support various components of the low-pressure rotor, including the fan and other mechanical systems. These bearings are crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of the engine at speeds exceeding 10,000 RPM.
Integrating BARB into the assembly line has required extensive training and adjustments to ensure seamless integration with existing processes. Traditionally, each step in the assembly process is meticulously recorded by mechanics who sign off on their completion. With BARB, the robot itself becomes a part of this record-keeping system, providing digital documentation that tracks its operations accurately.
