
India Tests Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile, Moves Closer to Domestic Air Defense System
India has made significant strides in its quest for self-reliance in defense technology with the successful testing of a long-range surface-to-air interceptor missile. The test was conducted off the coast of Odisha state from A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island and marked a crucial milestone in developing an indigenous air defense system capable of countering aerial threats over extended ranges.
The Kusha, as the newly tested missile is known, aims to fill a critical gap in India's current air defense capabilities. Currently, India relies heavily on Russia’s S-400 Triumf systems for long-range coverage and Israel-developed Barak-8 systems for shorter ranges. The successful test of the Kusha could bridge this gap by providing an intermediate range capability.
The project involves developing three variants with engagement ranges estimated to be around 150 kilometers, 250 kilometers, and 350–400 kilometers respectively. While the exact range of the interceptor tested was not disclosed in the official statement, it demonstrated its ability to neutralize a wide array of aerial threats including fighter jets, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and large enemy aircraft.
India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the strategic importance of this development, stating that it represents a significant leap forward for India’s air defense capabilities. The success of the test underscores India's growing capability to develop advanced missile systems domestically, reducing its reliance on foreign imports.
Analysts like Dinakar Peri from Carnegie India highlight the critical need for such advancements given India's long borders with Pakistan and China. They note that while existing S-400 systems have played a crucial role in recent conflicts, there is an urgent requirement to scale up long-range air defenses to meet future challenges.
As part of its broader military modernization program, India has prioritized strengthening its air defense infrastructure against evolving threats such as drones, cruise missiles, and combat aircraft. The recent approval by the Defense Acquisition Council for a $5.4 billion package includes funds allocated towards counter-drone and layered air-defense capabilities.
Despite these advancements, India will still depend on foreign systems like the S-400 for several years while it validates and refines its indigenous Kusha system through further trials. The government has committed to developing all weapon system elements domestically, including missiles, radars, and command centers, under the guidance of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and industry partners.
Over the past two decades, India's push for self-reliance in defense technology has intensified significantly. This latest test reflects a broader trend towards domestic production and development of advanced military technologies and hardware, positioning India as a key player in global arms manufacturing.
