
Pentagon Urges Rapid Development of Affordable Long-Range Weapons
The U.S. Department of Defense is urgently calling for the development and testing of cost-effective long-range strike weapons within an unprecedented timeframe of just three months. This initiative comes in response to concerns over dwindling supplies of expensive guided munitions, a critical issue highlighted by the ongoing Iran war. The Pentagon aims to introduce Ground-Based Affordable Mass (GBAM) weapons that can be produced at a significantly lower cost than current options like the Tomahawk missile.
The Defense Innovation Unit has launched the GBAM Challenge to accelerate the development process and encourage innovative solutions from industry players. Contestants are required to submit their ideas in the form of pitch decks or white papers by August 5, with winning teams invited to participate in a Phase II flight demonstration at a government test site in early November. The top contenders could receive up to $5 million for operational testing and further development.
The GBAM initiative seeks weapons that cost less than $250,000 each and can be mass-produced within 18 months of the initial pitch submission. These systems must demonstrate mature technology capable of operating over distances of at least 600 nautical miles with a payload ranging from 35 to 100 pounds. Additionally, they should feature automatic target recognition and autonomous terminal guidance capabilities, ensuring reliable performance even in GPS-denied environments.
The Pentagon's push for these new weapons is part of a broader strategy to enhance the military’s operational flexibility and sustainability during prolonged conflicts. By supplementing expensive smart munitions with cheaper alternatives, commanders can broaden their targeting options while preserving more costly assets for critical missions. This approach also aims to reduce logistical burdens on deploying units by minimizing the need for specialized launch equipment.
In parallel with the GBAM program, other initiatives such as the Family of Affordable Mass Missiles (FAMM-BAR) and Low-Cost Containerized Missiles hypersonic weapons programs are advancing similar goals. These efforts collectively reflect a strategic shift towards more cost-effective and scalable weapon systems that can be rapidly deployed in large numbers.
The urgency behind these developments underscores the Pentagon's recognition of the escalating costs associated with maintaining high-readiness military capabilities amid prolonged conflicts. By fostering innovation and leveraging emerging technologies, the U.S. military aims to maintain its edge on the global stage while addressing budgetary constraints and operational challenges.
