U.S. Air Force Eyes Commanding Australian Autonomous Fighter Drones

The U.S. Air Force is intensifying its collaboration with Australia's Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as it integrates the MQ-28 Ghost Bat drone into joint military exercises and future combat operations. During a recent exercise known as Valiant Shield, the MQ-28 participated alongside American aircraft, marking an important step in the development of autonomous fighter drones.

General Kevin Schneider, commander of Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), highlighted the significance of this integration during a talk at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. He noted that U.S. test units were closely involved with Australian efforts to refine and deploy the MQ-28, indicating deep collaboration between the two air forces in testing new technologies.

The Experimental Operations Unit (EOU) based at Nellis Air Force Base plays a crucial role in this partnership. Established in 2023 and expanded last year into a full squadron, the EOU is dedicated to developing tactics for collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), which includes both General Atomics' FQ-42 Dark Merlin and Anduril's FQ-44 Fury drones.

While the MQ-28 is not officially part of the U.S. CCA program, it has been used in support of advanced autonomous capabilities research by the Air Force. The RAAF currently operates eight pre-production Block 1 Ghost Bats, with Boeing working on an improved Block 2 version that features enhanced fuel and payload capacities along with internal weapons bays.

The potential for U.S. pilots to command Australian MQ-28s is a significant development in military strategy. This partnership underscores the growing reliance on autonomous systems and collaborative operations between allied nations. The ability to seamlessly integrate different drone models across national boundaries could redefine future combat scenarios, enhancing both strategic flexibility and operational effectiveness.

Boeing's enhancements to the Ghost Bat, including increased range and capacity for beyond-line-of-sight capabilities, further solidify its role in advanced military exercises. These improvements are expected to pave the way for more sophisticated Block 3 versions of the drone, which will likely see broader adoption by both Australian and U.S. forces.

The collaboration between the United States and Australia on autonomous fighter drones reflects a broader trend in global defense strategies, where nations increasingly seek to leverage cutting-edge technology to maintain military superiority. As such partnerships continue to evolve, they may set new standards for international cooperation in developing next-generation combat systems.
