F-16s and F-35s Deployed for Critical 'Wild Weasel' Missions Against Iran's Air Defenses

The U.S. Air Force has intensified its operations in the Middle East by deploying additional fighter jets to counter Iran’s robust air defense systems. The deployment includes F-16 Fighting Falcons from Germany and F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters from the United Kingdom, both of which are equipped for Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD) missions, commonly referred to as “Wild Weasel” operations.

These specialized SEAD missions have become increasingly vital in recent months due to Iran’s sophisticated air defense capabilities that pose significant threats to American and allied aircraft. Since the conflict with Iran resumed in early July, these fighter jets have been crucial in neutralizing enemy defenses and ensuring safe passage for other military assets operating over hostile territories.

According to Air & Space Forces Magazine, the F-16s from the 480th Fighter Squadron based at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany are particularly adept at executing SEAD missions. These aircraft were previously withdrawn as tensions with Iran eased temporarily but have now returned to bolster U.S. military presence in the region.

Iran's air defense systems, which include advanced surface-to-air missiles and smaller ground-based weapons like shoulder-fired missiles, have proven effective against both drones and manned aircraft. In recent confrontations, multiple Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles were downed at the onset of hostilities, while an American F-35 suffered damage that necessitated an emergency landing. Additionally, a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle was lost to a ground-launched missile in April, underscoring the critical nature of SEAD missions.

Retired General Phil Breedlove, who previously held high-ranking positions within NATO and the U.S. military command structure, emphasized the unique capabilities of American forces in conducting SEAD operations. He noted that dedicated units with specialized training are essential for neutralizing enemy air defenses effectively. The United States stands out globally due to its extensive investment in developing these highly capable assets.
