California Man Charged with Murder After Allegedly Beating Mother to Death with Hammer

A 36-year-old man from Laguna Beach, California, has been charged with felony murder following a violent attack that resulted in the death of his mother. The incident occurred on July 20 when police were called to a home where furniture was broken and there was evidence of blood. Upon arrival, officers found Safford James Wolfson, 36, covered in blood with an apparent self-inflicted neck wound.

In another part of the house, Wolfson’s mother, Angela Caprioli, 61, was discovered in a bedroom suffering from severe blunt force injuries inflicted by what authorities believe to be a hammer. Caprioli was pronounced dead at the scene while Wolfson was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office filed charges against Wolfson on July 27, accusing him of one count of murder and an enhancement charge for using a deadly weapon during the attack. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from 26 years to life in prison.

According to information provided by KTLA, Wolfson and Caprioli had collaborated on running a sober living and assisted adult care facility located in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Wolfson held positions as both the business manager and administrative assistant at this establishment. However, authorities have yet to disclose any specific motive behind the alleged attack.

Witnesses report that an argument between Wolfson and Caprioli occurred outside his home shortly before the incident. A neighbor described seeing them in a heated conversation prior to Caprioli entering the house and slamming the door shut in frustration.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life, stating, "It is heartbreaking to think that someone could so violently end the life of the very person who gave them life. We will continue to pursue justice for Ms. Caprioli and everyone who loved her."

Wolfson remains in custody with bail set at $1 million pending his arraignment scheduled for October 1.

This case has drawn significant attention due to its gruesome nature and the intimate familial relationship between victim and alleged perpetrator, echoing similar high-profile cases of filicide across the country.
