Marine Corps Completes Fleet of 359 MV-22B Osprey Aircraft

The United States Marine Corps has officially received its final MV-22B Osprey aircraft, marking the completion of a two-decade-long procurement process that saw the delivery of 359 such tiltrotor aircraft. The event was celebrated in Amarillo, Texas, where Lt. Gen. William Swan, deputy commandant for aviation, highlighted the transformative impact of the MV-22B on Marine Corps operations.

The MV-22B Osprey is a unique hybrid aircraft that combines the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with the long-range flight characteristics of an airplane. This versatility has made it indispensable to the Marine Corps, which uses the aircraft extensively for missions involving transportation between Navy ships, remote bases, and battlefields. Since its operational debut in 2007, the Osprey has replaced the CH-46 Sea Knight helicopters, significantly enhancing the mobility and strategic flexibility of Marine units.

Each MV-22B typically costs between $75 million and $90 million, reflecting the advanced technology and capabilities integrated into these aircraft. The high cost is justified by their operational effectiveness; they have enabled commanders to make decisions that were previously constrained by distance limitations. According to Lt. Gen. Swan, the Osprey has fundamentally altered how Marine Air-Ground Task Forces (MAGTF) generate combat power.

The significance of the MV-22B extends beyond its role in the Marine Corps. The U.S. Air Force also operates approximately 50 Ospreys in special operations roles, while the Navy utilizes a smaller number for ship-to-shore ferry duties. However, it is within the Marine Corps that the aircraft has become an integral part of the MAGTF structure, serving as its backbone.

Lt. Gen. Swan emphasized during the ceremony that the MV-22B's capabilities have allowed commanders to take initiative and complicate enemy operations in ways not possible before. This strategic advantage underscores why the substantial investment in Osprey procurement was deemed essential for maintaining U.S. military superiority.

The completion of this fleet marks a significant milestone in modernizing Marine aviation, setting the stage for future advancements that will continue to enhance operational capabilities and readiness.
