
Ancient Earthworks Reveal Massive Lost Civilization in the Amazon
Researchers have uncovered evidence of a previously unknown precolonial civilization that thrived nearly 2,000 years ago in southwestern Amazonia. Using advanced LiDAR technology capable of penetrating dense forest canopies, an international team has identified more than 20,000 geometric earthworks across Brazil’s Acre and Amazonas states. The findings suggest the region was home to a vast network of monumental structures that were once hidden beneath the rainforest.
The study, published in Nature, challenges long-held assumptions about the ancient Amazon's population density and land management practices. Researchers estimate that the area may have been inhabited by as many as 3 million people during its peak period between 100 AD to 300 AD. This revelation could significantly alter our understanding of how humans shaped the Amazon’s landscape and biodiversity over millennia.
The LiDAR survey, which covered more than 2,700 miles, revealed intricate geometric patterns including squares, circles, rectangles, and multilateral enclosures connected by roads. Some earthworks feature ditches up to 43 feet wide and more than 16 feet deep, with towering earthen embankments alongside them. These structures were previously unknown or underestimated due to the dense vegetation covering the region.
The newly discovered ceremonial complexes are part of a vast landscape that researchers believe was meticulously planned and managed by a sophisticated society. This discovery suggests that large-scale human activity in the Amazon predates European colonization, challenging earlier narratives about the region's history.
"These findings force us to reconsider the scale and impact of ancient societies on their environment," said Dr. Mariana Pärssinen, one of the lead researchers involved in the study. "The sheer number of earthworks indicates a level of social organization and engineering prowess that was previously unappreciated."
The research team's use of LiDAR technology marks a significant advancement in archaeological methods for studying densely forested areas. The ability to map through vegetation has opened up new possibilities for uncovering hidden historical sites across the globe.
This discovery not only sheds light on an ancient civilization but also raises questions about how modern conservation efforts should account for these previously unknown human influences when managing and preserving the Amazon's rich biodiversity and cultural heritage.
