
Marines Receive New Anti-Drone Ammunition for M4 and M27 Rifles
The United States Marine Corps has begun equipping its forces with a new type of ammunition designed to counter small drones. This specialized round can be fired from both M4 carbines and M27 Infantry Automatic Rifles, providing Marines with an enhanced capability to neutralize aerial threats. The Drone Round 5.56 L Variant separates into five distinct projectiles upon firing, increasing the likelihood of hitting fast-moving targets like reconnaissance and attack drones.
According to a Marine Corps acquisition spokesperson, the service has already procured 400,000 rounds and plans to purchase an additional one million cartridges in fiscal year 2027. Deliveries have started at ammunition supply points across various units and are expected to be completed by September of this year. The decision on which Marine Expeditionary Force units will receive the anti-drone round first rests with their respective commanders.
The development and procurement of this new ammunition reflect a growing concern within the military regarding the proliferation of small drones used in combat scenarios. These unmanned aerial vehicles pose significant threats to ground forces, capable of conducting surveillance or launching attacks without being detected by traditional defense systems. In April 2026, soldiers from the 18th Airborne Corps tested the anti-drone round against small drones during exercises at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This cross-branch collaboration highlights a broader military initiative to develop and integrate advanced countermeasures against drone threats.
