Homicide Investigation Underway After California Teen Dies Following School Altercation
A 12-year-old girl in California has died, prompting a homicide investigation, after she was reportedly struck in the head with a metal water bottle during a school incident last month. Khimberly Zavaleta, a student at Reseda Charter High School, sustained injuries on February 17 while intervening to protect her younger sister from a bully. Her family indicates that blood vessels in Zavaleta's brain ruptured days after the altercation, ultimately leading to her death on Wednesday.
According to Zavaleta's mother, the incident occurred during dismissal when a male student confronted her daughter in a hallway. Zavaleta stepped in when her younger sister was being targeted, and it was at this point she was hit in the head with the water bottle. While the altercation was reportedly captured on camera, the specific moment of the bottle strike is not visible. Following the incident, Zavaleta visited the emergency room but was sent home, only to collapse days later due to a brain hemorrhage.
She was subsequently placed in a medically-induced coma and underwent emergency surgery before her heart failed. The Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division is currently investigating Zavaleta's death, though officials have declined to release further details. Los Angeles Unified School District officials are cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the tragic event.
