US Navy Expands Use of Unmanned Systems to Combat Drug Trafficking

The United States Navy has awarded a $16.3 million task order to California-based company Saildrone for the continued deployment of its unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in counternarcotics operations across the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. This move follows recent successful interdictions, including one that led to the seizure of over $81 million worth of cocaine with direct assistance from a Saildrone Voyager USV.

Since 2023, Saildrone’s USVs have been operating in coordination with U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), providing persistent surveillance capabilities that are critical for monitoring drug trafficking activities. The extension of this partnership underscores the strategic importance of unmanned systems in securing America's maritime borders.

Vice Admiral John Mustin, President of Saildrone, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting naval missions by maintaining a continuous presence along the southern border. "Our ability to stay on station and conduct surveillance for extended periods makes us an invaluable asset," Mustin stated. The Voyager USVs are equipped with advanced technology allowing them to perform long-duration tasks such as surface and subsurface surveillance, nearshore mapping, and seafloor characterization.

The deployment of these unmanned systems not only serves as a deterrent but also enhances situational awareness for U.S. forces operating in the region. Their operational capabilities have been instrumental in recent drug interdictions, highlighting their effectiveness in combating illicit trafficking routes.

In addition to the use of USVs, the U.S. military has conducted several strikes against suspected drug-carrying vessels since September 2025. These operations are part of broader efforts by the Trump administration and Pentagon to curb the flow of narcotics into the United States through maritime channels. As of June 22, there have been 66 confirmed strikes resulting in at least 196 fatalities.

The integration of unmanned systems like those provided by Saildrone represents a significant evolution in how U.S. military forces approach counternarcotics operations. These technologies offer enhanced surveillance and interdiction capabilities while reducing the risk to human personnel. As drug trafficking continues to pose a substantial threat, such innovations are likely to play an increasingly prominent role in future maritime security strategies.

The expansion of Saildrone’s contract with the U.S. Navy reflects growing recognition of unmanned systems' strategic value in counternarcotics efforts and broader national security objectives.
