Air Force Sticks with Sig Sauer M18 Pistol as Primary Sidearm

The U.S. Air Force has announced its intention to continue using the Sig Sauer M18 pistol as its standard-issue sidearm for airmen, according to an official spokesperson. The decision comes after several years of service and evaluation by the military branch. Since 2017, all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces have adopted either the full-sized M17 or the compact M18 pistols to replace the older M9 model that had been in use since 1985.

The Air Force’s preference for the M18 is rooted in its satisfaction with the weapon's performance and reliability during operational deployments. The service has procured approximately 125,000 of these compact pistols through the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Small Arms Program Office to equip combat arms units across various divisions.

"We are content with the M18 Modular Handgun System currently in use," stated an unnamed spokesperson from the Air Force. "We do not anticipate exploring alternative handgun options until this system nears its end of service life." This statement underscores the Air Force’s commitment to maintaining a consistent and reliable weapon system, particularly given limited procurement budgets that necessitate prioritizing older and higher-priority weapons.

The M18 pistol is a compact variant of Sig Sauer's Modular Handgun System, designed specifically for military use. It offers enhanced ergonomics and reliability compared to its predecessor, the M9. The Air Force’s decision to retain this model reflects broader trends within the Department of Defense (DoD) towards standardization and modernization of small arms.

While other branches may be considering future updates or replacements for their sidearms, the Air Force has signaled a preference for continuity with its current inventory. This approach aligns with ongoing efforts across the military to optimize spending on weapon systems that have proven effective in combat scenarios and training exercises.
