China's Missile Arsenal Expands: A Comprehensive Guide to Its Diverse Ballistic Missiles

China’s ballistic missile arsenal has seen significant growth over the past two decades, evolving from a small nuclear deterrent force into one of the most extensive and technologically advanced regional missile systems in the world. The People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF) now boasts an array of conventional and nuclear-capable missiles that are central to Beijing's anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) strategy, particularly aimed at deterring U.S. naval operations in the Western Pacific.

These missile systems range from short-range tactical weapons designed for a potential conflict with Taiwan to intermediate-range strategic missiles capable of striking targets as far away as Guam. The PLARF’s arsenal includes road-mobile, solid-fueled missiles that are increasingly precise and equipped with advanced warheads like hypersonic glide vehicles (HGVs) and maneuverable reentry vehicles (MaRVs). These features complicate adversary defense systems by making it harder to predict the trajectory and timing of incoming threats.

According to Pentagon assessments from last year, China is estimated to have around 600 missiles in its ‘boosted hypersonic’ category. This includes both land-based and air-launched ballistic missiles that can carry HGVs or MaRVs, enhancing their effectiveness against moving targets such as naval vessels. The development of these advanced systems reflects a strategic shift towards more flexible and resilient missile capabilities.

The PLARF’s short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) are primarily intended for battlefield use and regional threats within 1,000 kilometers. These include variants of the DF-11, DF-15, and DF-16 families, which play a crucial role in holding Taiwan and parts of Japan at risk during potential conflicts. The missiles’ accuracy has improved significantly through ongoing modernization efforts, enhancing their ability to strike military and infrastructure targets effectively.

Medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs) with ranges between 1,000-3,000 kilometers are designed for broader regional strikes, while intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBMs), which can reach up to 5,500 kilometers, enable China to target distant strategic locations. These longer-range systems contribute significantly to the PLARF’s ability to project power and influence across wider areas of interest.

The integration of hypersonic glide vehicles and maneuverable reentry vehicles into these missile systems underscores China's commitment to maintaining technological superiority in its defense capabilities. Hypersonic missiles, with their high-speed and unpredictable flight paths, pose a significant challenge to existing air defense systems due to the reduced reaction time and difficulty in interception.

This expansion of China’s ballistic missile arsenal not only enhances its military deterrence but also complicates regional security dynamics. It highlights Beijing's strategic focus on developing robust A2/AD capabilities to counter potential threats from external powers, particularly the United States, which seeks to maintain a strong presence in the Indo-Pacific region. As such developments continue, they will likely shape future defense policies and international relations in the region.
