Florida Man Arrested for Murdering Mother After Bailing Him Out of Jail

A 21-year-old man from Polk County, Florida, has been charged with first-degree murder after allegedly killing his mother and causing multiple car crashes while fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on July 21 when Gibson Nash, who had recently been released from jail by his mother Margaret Chu Dufour, is believed to have committed the fatal act.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to several hit-and-run incidents involving a BMW that night. Nash was driving the vehicle and fled after hitting two other cars. He sustained injuries in the crashes and was taken to the hospital for treatment of liver failure caused by an overdose on Tylenol. Three drivers involved in the collisions were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies arrived at Dufour’s home later that morning, where they found signs of a violent struggle inside. Neighbors reported hearing loud noises around 4:30 a.m., and deputies discovered broken glass and a shovel outside her residence. Upon entering the house, investigators found Dufour deceased in the living room with blunt force trauma to her face. A medical examiner determined that she died from both blunt force trauma and strangulation.

Nash’s history of mental illness, including schizophrenia, was revealed during the investigation. He had previously been arrested for domestic violence after allegedly charging at his mother with a knife during an argument over an Xbox console. Dufour, who worked as a nurse, bailed Nash out of jail in Tennessee on August 3 and brought him back to Florida to live with her.

Blood found on Nash’s boots matched that of his deceased mother. Once he was no longer sedated at the hospital, authorities arrested him for first-degree murder and leaving the scene of a crash. Polk County Sheriff Grady Nash stated, “Gibson Nash needs to remain locked away from the public forever. The way he murdered his mother was a mix of pure rage and extreme violence.”

This case highlights the complex challenges faced by families dealing with severe mental health issues and the potential dangers when such individuals are released back into their homes without adequate support systems in place.
