Marine Corps Hosts Hackathon to Develop AI Agents Using GenAI.mil Platform

The United States Marine Corps is set to host a multi-day hackathon from October 26 to 30 at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. The event aims to leverage the military’s enterprise generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) platform, known as GenAI.mil, to develop AI agents that can enhance operational efficiency and reduce administrative burdens for service personnel.

Lt. General Joseph Matos III, deputy commandant for information, has issued a MARADMIN message announcing the initiative. The hackathon will focus on creating practical digital solutions using both GenAI.mil's Agent track and an Advanced Development track utilizing Marine Corps and Naval Postgraduate School resources. Participants from various military branches, government agencies, industry partners, and academia are invited to apply by October 9 through an online portal.

GenAI.mil was launched in December 2025 by Pentagon leadership with the goal of streamlining workflows and boosting productivity across the Department of Defense (DoD). The platform integrates commercial AI models such as Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and xAI’s Grok. Since its inception, GenAI.mil has seen rapid adoption; in June 2026, Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael reported that approximately 1.5 million personnel had utilized the system to support their daily tasks.

The Marine Corps was the first service branch to designate GenAI.mil as its preferred enterprise AI platform. This move prompted other branches within the DoD to follow suit, accelerating the integration of advanced AI technologies across the military infrastructure. The hackathon is expected to further this initiative by fostering innovation and collaboration among participants from diverse backgrounds.

The event will be conducted at an unclassified level, allowing for open participation and exchange of ideas. Participants are tasked with developing tangible products that can be immediately deployed or refined for broader use within the enterprise. These solutions aim to address specific operational requirements while accelerating the Marine Corps’ ability to integrate AI-enabled capabilities into its operations.

This hackathon is part of a larger trend in the military towards leveraging cutting-edge technologies through collaborative events like hackathons. The Marine Corps has recently announced another AI-focused hackathon scheduled for September, which will concentrate on developing tools for training and education purposes. Such initiatives underscore the growing importance of artificial intelligence in modernizing military operations and enhancing strategic capabilities.
