A long-standing cold case from 1994 has finally seen justice after a Washington County man was arrested and charged with the murder of an elderly woman. Randall Joseph Gall, now 66 years old, faces second-degree murder charges following an investigation by the county’s District Attorney's Cold Case Unit.

The victim, Veta Hardebeck, was found dead on February 16, 1994, in her home located near Gaston, Oregon. Initially, authorities believed that Mrs. Hardebeck had died due to natural causes or an accident. However, a subsequent autopsy revealed signs of foul play, turning what was once thought to be a tragic but accidental death into a homicide case.

The case remained unsolved for nearly three decades until the Cold Case Unit received additional funding in recent years. This allowed them to submit existing evidence to a private DNA lab for testing and analysis. The renewed investigation led to significant developments that ultimately identified Gall as a suspect.

Caroline Ledbury, Hardebeck’s daughter, provided harrowing details about her mother's death during an interview with KGW news. She described the brutal nature of the assault, noting that someone had beaten her mother severely before throwing her through a kitchen window, causing glass to penetrate Mrs. Hardebeck's skull.

Ledbury also pointed out that the scene appeared staged, suggesting that the perpetrator may have attempted to make it look like an accidental fall or natural death. She recalled finding her mother lying on concrete with her arms folded in a manner that seemed deliberate and unnatural.

The District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Gall is currently being held without bail pending further legal proceedings. This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to solve cold cases, even decades after they initially occurred.

While the arrest brings closure for Mrs. Hardebeck's family and community members who had long awaited justice, it also underscores the persistent challenges faced by investigators in older homicide cases.
