
Ancient Roman Bridge Surfaces After 1700 Years in Europe's Second-Longest River
Archaeologists have recently uncovered the remnants of a mile-long ancient bridge constructed by the Romans nearly 1700 years ago. The structure, known as Constantine’s Bridge, has surfaced from beneath the waters of the Danube due to an ongoing major summer drought that is causing water levels in Europe's rivers to drop significantly.
The discovery occurred near Gigen, Bulgaria, where unusually shallow waters allowed researchers to spot the foundations of this remarkable engineering feat. Built under Emperor Constantine I in A.D. 328, the bridge was once the longest Roman-built structure of its kind anywhere in the ancient world. It stretched from close to the modern Bulgarian city of Pleven to Sucidava in Romania.
The construction of Constantine’s Bridge is believed to have been inspired by Trajan's bridge, an earlier engineering marvel designed by Apollodorus of Damascus. The completion and inauguration of this new bridge were commemorated with a unique gold medallion minted in Rome, only two copies of which survive today.
Despite its grandeur, the ancient bridge was likely destroyed within decades of its construction, falling into disrepair around A.D. 367. Its reappearance now offers researchers an unprecedented opportunity to study this long-submerged architectural marvel and gain insights into Roman engineering techniques from nearly two millennia ago.
Pavel Popov, a researcher with the Pleven Regional Historical Museum in Bulgaria, utilized drones to map out the bridge’s foundations, providing detailed data on its size and layout. This technology has allowed for a clearer understanding of the scale and complexity of this ancient structure.
The Danube is Europe's second-longest river, and the current drought conditions affecting it have also impacted other major waterways across the continent, including the Rhine. The unprecedented low water levels are revealing not just historical artifacts but also reshaping our understanding of past human activity along these rivers.
