New Transparent Glasses Use Flickering Light to Enhance Brain Function

Scientists at Seoul National University have developed a pair of transparent glasses equipped with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that use flickering light stimulation (FLS) to potentially enhance cognitive performance and treat early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. The innovative device, which is currently undergoing initial trials, aims to improve brain function by inducing gamma wave entrainment—a process where brainwaves synchronize at high-frequency oscillations.

The research team, led by Hyeonwook Chae, has created a functional design that delivers FLS in a comfortable and unobstructed manner. Previous studies have shown that flickering light can influence neural processes linked to memory, attention, and sensory processing, potentially mitigating cognitive decline associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer’s disease.

Chae and colleagues explain that the glasses are designed to deliver FLS at specific frequencies necessary for gamma wave entrainment while maintaining visibility. This breakthrough addresses a critical challenge in delivering effective light stimulation to human eyes without compromising everyday usability. The transparent OLED technology allows patients to engage in normal activities while receiving therapeutic light stimuli.

In preclinical studies, researchers observed that flickering light can modulate amyloid proteins—a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease—suggesting potential benefits beyond cognitive enhancement. However, the team emphasizes the need for further clinical trials to fully assess the glasses' efficacy and long-term safety.

The transparent OLED glasses represent a significant step towards practical applications of FLS therapy. By overcoming previous limitations in delivering light stimulation comfortably and effectively, this technology could pave the way for new treatments addressing various cognitive conditions.
