Pennsylvania Man Charged with Homicide After Slitting Ex-Girlfriend's Throat
On March 6, in Telford, Pennsylvania, a tragic incident unfolded that led to the death of Maria Bernarda Popol Garcia, a 23-year-old woman who had recently moved from Guatemala to the United States for better opportunities. According to the Bucks County District Attorney's Office, Darwin David Espinal-Del Cid, 27, has been charged with criminal homicide in connection with her death.
The events leading up to Garcia's demise began when she informed a co-worker on March 6 that she was planning to move out of the apartment she shared with Espinal-Del Cid. She started moving her belongings to a new residence shortly after making this decision. Later that night, the couple got into an argument inside a rideshare vehicle while returning to their home on North Main Street in Telford.
During the early hours of March 7, neighbors reported hearing loud arguments coming from Espinal-Del Cid and Garcia's apartment, which was the last known sighting of Garcia alive. According to District Attorney Joe Khan, who addressed the press regarding this case, Espinal-Del Cid allegedly used a sharp object to stab Garcia in her neck while they were inside their shared living space.
Following the attack, Espinal-Del Cid stuffed Garcia into a closet and covered her body with a blanket or towel before placing clothes on top of her. He then left her in this condition, allowing her to die from blood loss and asphyxiation. The defendant fled the scene shortly after committing these acts, taking with him the murder weapon, $400 cash, and Garcia's cellphone.
Espinal-Del Cid's actions did not end there; he impersonated Garcia using her stolen phone in an attempt to deceive those who were concerned about her well-being. This deception continued for several days until March 13, when Garcia’s parents filed a missing persons report on her birthday, leading authorities to investigate the case more thoroughly.
A few days after the missing person's report was submitted, someone entered the couple's apartment and discovered Garcia's body in the closet where she had been left. This discovery prompted law enforcement officials from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, along with assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), to track down Espinal-Del Cid.
After months of investigation, authorities managed to locate Espinal-Del Cid in Honduras, where he had fled following the murder. He is currently being processed for extradition back to Pennsylvania to face charges related to Garcia's death and other crimes committed during his escape.
Garcia was described by friends and colleagues as a kind-hearted individual who worked at a local Latin American restaurant and grocery store in Telford. Her tragic story has deeply affected the community, highlighting issues of domestic violence and the severe consequences that can arise from such situations.
This case underscores the importance of addressing domestic disputes before they escalate to lethal levels and emphasizes the need for support systems to help individuals facing abusive relationships.
