Navy Investigates Power Failure That Left Destroyer USS Benfold Disabled for Days in South China Sea

The U.S. Navy is currently investigating an incident where the destroyer USS Benfold suffered a power failure that left it disabled for several days last month while operating in the South China Sea. The ship was towed to Subic Bay, Philippines, for repairs after losing power on July 24 due to what Cmdr. Matthew Comer, spokesperson for the 7th Fleet, described as an "engineering casualty" involving one of its generators.

Cmdr. Comer emphasized that there were no injuries reported among the crew during this incident. The loss of power impacted essential services such as potable water, galley facilities, sanitation systems, and air conditioning aboard the ship. Despite these challenges, Cmdr. Comer praised the crew for their resilience, professionalism, and unwavering steadiness in handling the situation.

The USS Benfold was part of the George Washington Carrier Strike Group at the time of the incident. Other ships within this group provided critical support to the affected vessel, including the cruiser USS Robert Smalls, which supplied meals to the sailors aboard the disabled destroyer until it could be towed to Subic Bay for repairs.

Upon arriving in Subic Bay on July 28, the crew was accommodated off the ship and received food and lodging assistance. Power was fully restored to the USS Benfold by July 30, allowing repair work to commence immediately thereafter. Repairs were completed by August 7, enabling the destroyer to resume its duties.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by naval vessels operating in contested waters like the South China Sea. The region is a focal point for geopolitical tensions between various nations with overlapping territorial claims and strategic interests. Such operational disruptions can impact military readiness and diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining stability in the area.

The investigation into the cause of the power failure aboard the USS Benfold underscores the Navy's commitment to ensuring the reliability and safety of its fleet, particularly in high-stakes maritime environments where rapid response capabilities are crucial for mission success and crew welfare.
