US Tanker Aircraft Depart Bulgaria Amid Ongoing Tensions With Iran

The United States has withdrawn two of its KC-135 tanker aircraft from Bezmer air base in Bulgaria, a move that comes just under a month after their deployment initially sparked controversy with Iran. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed the departure on Saturday during a press briefing.

Since February 28, when hostilities between the United States and Iran escalated into an official state of war, the U.S. has sought temporary basing rights for its military assets in allied countries to support ongoing operations. Bulgaria, despite facing threats from Iran over the deployment, agreed to allow the use of Bezmer air base for the American aircraft.

Iran had previously warned that deploying these tankers would be considered an act of complicity in what it termed as "aggression and war crimes." However, Sofia dismissed these concerns and proceeded with the necessary legal approvals. The Bulgarian parliament ratified the agreement on July 22, allowing the U.S. military to station its aircraft at Bezmer.

The presence of American tankers in Bulgaria drew significant local opposition from residents near the air base who feared potential retaliation by Iranian forces. Protesters voiced their concerns about the risk of missile and drone attacks targeting the base due to its proximity to conflict zones.

Despite these protests, all flights conducted by the U.S. aircraft during their temporary stay were strictly training missions over allied territories, according to Minister Stoyanov. He reassured that Bulgaria had received prior information from U.S. authorities about the deployment and that there was no evidence of direct threats to national security.

"We have been in full coordination with the United States throughout this process," said Stoyanov, emphasizing the strategic importance of such cooperation for both nations' defense interests. The decision to allow the temporary basing of American aircraft reflects Bulgaria's commitment to supporting NATO allies and maintaining regional stability amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

The withdrawal of these tankers marks a significant development in the evolving dynamics of military alliances and geopolitical pressures within Europe. While it temporarily alleviates some local concerns, the broader implications for regional security remain uncertain as the conflict with Iran continues to unfold.
