China's Humanoid Robot Industry Advances from Research to Real-World Deployment at 2026 World Robot Conference

China showcased the rapid advancement of its humanoid robotics industry last week with a series of significant events in Beijing. The city hosted the 2026 World Robot Conference, followed by the five-day World Humanoid Robot Games, and concluded with Unitree's highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO). Bank of America analyst Ming Hsun Lee attended these events and provided detailed insights to clients about China's progress in this sector.

Lee highlighted that China’s humanoid robot industry has shifted from being primarily focused on research demonstrations to real-world commercial applications. The 2026 World Robot Conference featured over 300 exhibitors, including companies showcasing advanced robotics, AI models, and critical components. Unlike previous years, which concentrated more on theoretical research and industrial applications, this year's conference emphasized practical uses for these technologies in logistics, retail, services, and household tasks.

One notable demonstration came from X Square Robot, which showcased a dual-arm system capable of sorting over 1,800 parcels per hour—a rate far exceeding the typical human worker’s capacity of handling between 1,200 to 1,400 parcels. Similarly, Galaxea AI reported a success rate above 95% for its retail sorting and delivery system, underscoring the robots' efficiency in real-world scenarios.

Other startups such as Unitree, Galbot, and Spirit AI also displayed their capabilities at the event. These companies demonstrated robots performing tasks like folding clothes, preparing meals, sorting household objects, and assembling supermarket orders. The conference provided a comprehensive view of how humanoid robotics is integrating into various aspects of daily life and commerce.

The advancements in dexterous robotic hands were another highlight. These hands now offer between 6 to 37 degrees of freedom, with components completing approximately one million operating cycles. Tactile sensors have become essential for these hands, accounting for about 20-25% of the total cost of a dexterous hand. According to Lee's analysis, key components like force and torque sensors, tactile sensors, and planetary roller screws are experiencing rapid cost reductions due to improved manufacturing processes and economies of scale. This trend is expected to lead to a 45% reduction in humanoid robot costs by 2030.

Lee emphasized the importance of embodied AI applications expanding beyond research settings into practical scenarios. He noted that world action models (WAMs) are increasingly adopted, enhancing robots' generalization capabilities and performance over long periods. Leading robotics companies are now working on developing unified base models to control different types of tasks more efficiently.

The events in Beijing underscore China's commitment to leading the global humanoid robot market through technological innovation and commercial deployment. As these technologies continue to advance and become more cost-effective, they promise significant impacts across various industries, from logistics and retail to healthcare and home automation.
