Texas Neighbor Sentenced to Nine Years for Shooting Teen During Pet Guinea Pig Funeral

A 46-year-old man from Houston, John Martin Dixon, has been sentenced to nine years in state prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The incident occurred on July 17, 2025, when Dixon shot Emmanuel Menchaca, an 18-year-old high school graduate, while the teenager was burying his pet guinea pig.

According to Harris County court records and statements from police, the shooting took place around midnight in Houston. During this time, Menchaca and his younger brother were in their backyard conducting a late-night funeral for their deceased pet guinea pig. As they returned to the front of their home via the driveway, Dixon allegedly opened fire on them.

Menchaca was shot three times, with at least one bullet striking him in the back. The victim described feeling a push from behind before realizing he had been hit. His younger brother managed to take cover behind a vehicle and witnessed his sibling being repeatedly shot while also making eye contact with Dixon during the ordeal.

The shooting left Menchaca shocked and confused about why Dixon would attack them. Despite the traumatic event, both brothers were able to run inside their home and inform their parents of what had transpired. The elder brother has since started college in San Antonio and is known for his love of animals, soccer, and Raising Cane's chicken fingers.

Police investigations revealed that Dixon had used a firearm earlier on the day of the shooting to kill a snake near his back door and a possum. His father, who owned the gun, stated that no one else typically uses it but him. The weapon was later found in the elder Dixon’s room under a flashlight.

The case against Dixon progressed slowly, with charges being filed weeks after the incident. He was added to Texas's 10 Most Wanted Fugitive List and arrested in August 2025 before posting bond in September of the same year. The formal indictment for the crime came in January 2026.

Under his plea agreement, Dixon received a reduced sentence from Judge Tami Pierce after prosecutors dropped an additional firearm-related charge. He was also credited with 23 days served during pretrial detention. This tragic event underscores the serious consequences of gun violence and its impact on young lives.
