Army Soldier Sentenced to Life for Murdering Toddler Daughter

An Onslow County jury has found Jeanie Ditty, a 33-year-old active-duty U.S. Army soldier, guilty of first-degree murder and felony child abuse in the death of her two-year-old daughter Macy Ditty. The verdict came after three hours of deliberation on August 20th, following a retrial that began on August 10th.

Macy Ditty was admitted to the hospital on December 2nd, 2015, with extensive bruising and severe brain injuries, which medical staff determined had occurred between eight to 24 hours prior. The child's father was deployed overseas at the time, leaving Jeanie Ditty as the sole caregiver. Despite being kept alive on life support until her father could return home, Macy passed away shortly before her third birthday on December 4th.

In a disturbing twist, after the toddler’s death but before autopsy results were released, Jeanie Ditty contacted photographer Sunny Jo to take memorial photos with her deceased daughter at a cemetery. She initially claimed that the child had choked on a banana. The “One More Time” photo package typically costs between $300 and $500, but Jo offered his services for free out of sympathy.

An autopsy conducted in March 2016 revealed that Macy Ditty died from blunt force trauma, confirming her death as a homicide. Jeanie Ditty was arrested shortly after the findings were released and charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse. Her initial trial ended in a hung jury in 2020 when forensic evidence indicated that the toddler had been struck approximately 40 times.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit reopened an investigation into Ditty's case earlier this year after receiving reports of another incident involving facial injuries to a child, also believed to be her own. She was arrested in May and charged with felony child abuse while on pretrial release for Macy's murder case. Despite posting $250,000 bond, Ditty is scheduled to appear in court for the new charges in December.

During sentencing proceedings, Jeanie Ditty received a life sentence without parole for her daughter’s murder and an additional 157 to 201 months for the felony child abuse charge. The harsh verdict reflects the gravity of the crime and the need to ensure public safety from such extreme acts of violence against children.

This case has drawn significant attention due to its shocking nature, particularly given Ditty's status as a military service member.
