US Army Selects Five Companies for On-Base Nuclear Microreactor Projects

The United States Army has unveiled plans to invest billions of dollars in nuclear energy through the deployment of microreactors at several military installations across the country. In collaboration with the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit, the service has chosen five companies to develop and construct these advanced reactors on bases within the continental U.S., marking a significant step towards enhancing energy resilience for national security.

The selected firms include Antares Nuclear, BWXT Advanced Technologies, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, Radiant Industries, and Westinghouse Government Services. Each company will be responsible for installing microreactors at specific Army installations: Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Hood in Texas, Fort Benning in Georgia, and Fort Drum in New York. The initiative is part of the Army’s Janus program, which aims to introduce nuclear power independently without relying on civilian electrical grids.

The contracts awarded under this program are valued at up to $2.2 billion combined. Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll emphasized that these agreements will accelerate the delivery of reliable and safe baseload power directly to military installations. "We are building the energy resilience necessary to project combat power globally, without relying on potentially vulnerable external grids," Driscoll stated in a press release.

Each reactor will be contractor-owned and operated, with vendors receiving payments only upon achieving specific technical milestones. The Army clarified that while these reactors would provide critical support for installations, they do not intend to completely replace existing commercial power grids. Additionally, none of the future reactors will use highly enriched uranium, ensuring adherence to safety standards.

The push towards nuclear energy is driven by growing concerns over security risks and reliance on fossil fuels. Jeff Waksman, principal deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy, and Environment, highlighted that the domestic electric grid could be at risk during conflicts. "Unlike in prior conflicts, we now know that our domestic electric grid is potentially at risk," Waksman noted. This awareness underscores the need to develop alternative energy sources capable of sustaining military operations under various conditions.

The Janus program builds on previous efforts such as Project Pele, which aimed to create portable nuclear reactors for power generation. The current focus on microreactors reflects a strategic shift towards more compact and efficient solutions that can be integrated into existing infrastructure without significant modifications. These reactors are designed to provide reliable energy supplies, enhancing the operational flexibility of military bases.

Environmental considerations played a crucial role in selecting the installations for these projects. Brandon Cockrell, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for Energy & Sustainability, explained that the decision was based on a thorough analysis of mission requirements, power grid feasibility, environmental impact, and safety concerns. "This is because we have to be able to project power," Cockrell said, underscoring the importance of energy resiliency in meeting national security objectives.

The Army’s move towards nuclear microreactors also aligns with broader technological advancements aimed at improving energy production and distribution for military applications. For instance, the service is currently evaluating contractors to build a light tactical vehicle capable of generating large amounts of power for various defense technologies. This initiative highlights the integration of cutting-edge innovations into operational capabilities.

Radiant Industries disclosed details about its contract, which involves deploying 15 Kaleidos nuclear microreactors at Fort Benning. These reactors are transportable and "plug-in ready," offering flexibility in deployment scenarios. Similarly, General Atomics is advancing its Tactical Energy System (GA-TES) with a baseline output of 5 megawatts that can scale up to 20 megawatts, making it suitable for diverse operational needs.

The Army’s strategic pivot towards nuclear microreactors represents a significant milestone in enhancing energy security and operational resilience. As the nation continues to face complex challenges, these initiatives underscore the military's commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to ensure readiness and responsiveness in an evolving global landscape.
